Having recently completed a vessel for the Dept of Conservation including a custom built trailer having a towing weight in excess of 2500kg, we installed the SE Brake Controller System. I would have to say that this is by far the easiest and quickest to set up and use.
The wireless controller can be moved to any tow vehicle giving great flexibility and can be very easily adjusted to give various braking levels. Having delivered the vessel from Opua in the Bay of Islands to Coromandel, the system worked flawlessly and the ability to adjust the amount of trailer braking when descending steep hills make the trip an effortless exercise. We would certainly specify the SE Brake Controller System on any trailer that requires a break-away or trailers up to 3500kg.
Custom Built (CB) Transporters are based South Waikato. As their name suggests, they specialise in manufacturing custom trailers right across the spectrum from calf trailers to mobile food units. The bit we like about them is the fact that they’re innovative. There’s no better example than the smoker trailer that’s just rolled out of their workshop. The CB Transporters team worked alongside this client (search Dixie Barbecue on Facebook for more info) to create this unique trailer that is built around a big smoker unit which was imported out of USA. The trailer is designed for a max loading of 3500kg and will travel to various locations around Auckland serving Southern USA BBQ cuisine - ribs, brisket, chickens, pull pork etc. It has the capacity to cook up to 50 large chickens at once!
Due to its size, this trailer was fitted with 65mm box section axles of which both are fitted with 10” electric drum brakes. Baz fits and recommends the wireless SE brake control system because ‘it provides the driver with safe braking and also gives them flexibility to switch from vehicle to vehicle’ he says. This is achieved because the SE hand piece plugs into the accessory socket on the vehicle, the system is also a multi-volt so will work in any vehicle.
Lochiel Engineering has faced the same challenges that many trailer builders have with brake control – how do you achieve a road-legal braking solution to 3500kg that is towable by multiple vehicles?Manager Eddie Gilliland says "We’ve had various solutions over the years, but most have had issues of varying degrees. Vehicle wiring is getting more and more complicated, and affecting what can be fitted successfully now too”.
Our South Island Account Manager, Hamish Larsen, worked with Eddie late last year to have Lochiel begin fitting the TrailpartsTM SE brake controllers, and they are thrilled with the results. The electrical systems on Ford Ranger vehicles are notorious among trailer builders, but the Trailparts controller has successfully negated these. Says Eddie, "We figured on trialing the TrailpartsTM controller on a Ranger, and this has performed well. As a result of that, we have fitted many since too, and they have done exactly what Hamish had told us they would”.
